Complete these tasks to ensure you are well prepared for this unit of the stage 3 exam.

Task 1

1. Practice fitting a temporary stud (remember this must be done on a soft surface incase the horse puts their foot down).
2. Practice removing a temporary stud.

If you have not fitted studs before, observe someone experienced fitting and removing them before attempting it yourself.

Task 2

1. Clean out the stud holes.
2. Replug the stud holes.

Task 3

1. Examine different types of temporary studs.
2. Determine which type of studs are the most suitable for:
   1. Grass or indoor surfaces.
   2. Soft, sandy arenas or wetter grass.
   3. Firm ground.
   4. Varying terrains.
   5. Slippery surface on top, but firm underneath.
   6. Boggy or deep going.

Task 4

If you do not use studs, speak to experienced people who do and ask them:

1. which type of studs they use.
2. why they use those studs.
3. how many studs they use, and the reason they use that amount of studs.
4. the benefits they have experienced from using studs on their horse.
5. how it has affected their horse's way of going.
6. any issues they have experienced from using studs on their horse.

This task will enable you to speak in a practical manner in the exam.
