Step 1

Start by bringing both sets of reins over the horse’s head.

Step 2

Split the two sets of reins.

Use one hand to hold the bridoon reins, with the other hand put the bottom set of reins (curb rein) back over the horse’s head.

Place the buckle by the withers so they do not hand down whilst leading the horse.

Step 3

The bridoon reins should now be positioned on the inside of the curb reins. This ensures they will not interfere with the curb bit when leading.

Lead the horse off the bridoon reins only.

Step 4

To hold the bridoon reins, cross the reins over each other to prevent the bit tightening in the horse’s mouth.

With your right hand, roughly 2 inches below the horse’s chin, place 3 fingers over the cross of the reins. Your thumb and little finger sit underneath the cross on either side. Hold the slack of the reins in your left hand.
