The 5 point breastplate uses five attachment areas to prevent the saddle slipping backwards. Fitted with padded, elastic inserts on the shoulder line it allows freedom of movement and comfort for the horse whilst they are working.

Step 1

Place the 5 point breastplate over the horse’s head and position at the base of the neck (in the same way you would a running martingale neckstrap).

Bring the girth strap through the centre of the horse’s front legs. Thread the girth through the breastplate girth loop. Fasten the girth at the correct tension.

Step 2

Clip the top strap to the ‘D’ ring on the saddle.

Repeat on the other side.

Step 3

Thread the lower strap underneath the girth buckles.

Step 4

Loop the strap around the back buckle of the girth, and tuck it underneath the first buckle of the girth.

Step 5

Fasten the strap at the correct tension.

Repeat steps 3, 4 & 5 on the other side of the horse.

The Fit of a 5 Point Breastplate

  1. The breastplate neckstrap should sit on the shoulder line, behind the neck.
  2. The base of the neckstrap should be positioned centrally at the lowest point of the neck and highest part of the chest.
  3. One hands width should fit between the top of the horse’s neck and the breastplate neckstrap.
  4. All four straps attached to the saddle should be fitted with tension, without pulling against either the saddle or the breastplate.
  5. One hands width should fit between the breastplate girth strap and the base of the chest. This strap should be situated in the centre of the horse’s front legs.
  6. The martingale attachment should be fitted in the normal manner.
