Practical Tasks

Complete these tasks to gain practical experience on the use of bits.

Task 1

  1. Analyse the conformation of different equine's mouths, try to include:
    • thoroughbred/Arab types.
    • cob types.
    • warmblood types.
    • native breeds.
  2. Find out which type of bit each one is ridden in, and if possible observe them being worked. Assess the way they work in the bit.

Task 2

  1. Look at as many variations of types of bits as possible.

Task 3

  1. Using a selection of bits, fit them to different types of equines and analyse their suitability for the individual horse, include:
    • A variety of snaffle bits.
    • Dutch, English and American gags.
    • A pelham in double reins.
    • A pelham, using roundings, with one set of reins.
    • A kimblewick.
    • A double bridle.
  2. Where possible, either observe equines being ridden, or ride them, in the various bits. Analyse the suitability for each equine.

Task 4

  1. Fit a running martingale to either a double bridle or a Pelham using double reins (remember it is fitted to the snaffle rein).

Task 5

  1. Fit a bitless bridle.
  2. Fit a hackamore bridle.

Task 6

If any of the above tasks are difficult to complete, task 6 provides you with some alternatives (these can also be completed in conjunction with the other tasks).

  1. Speak to experienced horse owners about the bit they use, ask them:
    • how the equine works in the bit.
    • the reason for using the bit.
    • if they have tried other bits.
    • if they change the bit for different disciplines.
  2. Speak to anyone who has changed from using a bit to a bitless bridle, or vice versa, ask them:
    • why they made the change.
    • how the equine's way of going has altered.
  3. Visit a variety of competitions and observe the type of bits being used, and the horse's reaction to them, try to include:
    • Show jumping.
    • Eventing.
    • Dressage.
    • Show classes.
