Studs must not be fitted to a worn or thin shoe. This is because the stud may protrude past the end of the shoe and press into the sole of the hoof.
Pick up the horse’s hoof.
Using a horseshoe nail (or something similar) remove the cotton wool or stud plug from the hole. Ensure the hole is free from debris.
Spraying a small amount of WD40 into the hole will help to clean it thoroughly.
Using the stud tap, screw it into the hole to re-thread it.
When the studs are not fitted, the outside edge of the hole can become spoilt due to normal wear and tear of the shoe. Re-threading will correct this issue and allow the stud to be fitted easily.
With your fingers very carefully screw the stud into the hole, avoiding cross threading.
Once the stud is fitted at hand tightness, use the spanner to secure it. Do not over-tighten.
